John Nieto

John Nieto is an American painter known for his use of intense primary colors and bold brushstrokes. Depicting Native Americans and the scenery of the American Southwest, Nieto reflects on his heritage and the history of painting. Born in Denver, CO in 1936, he grew up in New Mexico and went on to study fine art at Southern Methodist University in Dallas during the late 1950s. After finishing school, he traveled to Paris where he first saw the Fauvist paintings of Henri Matisse and André Derain. Upon returning to the United States, Nieto began depicting animals and people of the Southwest in radiant colors. The artist currently lives and works in Texas.
